The Mai Tai was invented in 1944 by Victor Jules Bergeron (Trader Vic). He created it on the spot for some special guests from Tahiti. After trying it, they said “Mai Tai”, meaning "Amazing - Out of this world!" Or so the story goes!

Mai Tai

  • 1-1/2 oz. Aged Rum

  • 1/2 oz. Myer's Dark Rum (floated)

  • 1/2 oz. Orange Curacao

  • 3/4 oz. Lime juice

  • 1/4 oz. Orgeat*

  • 1/4 oz. Simple syrup

Method...

Add the ingredients, except for the dark rum, to a shaker tin. Add ice, give it a quick shake, and strain into a chilled rocks glass over crushed ice. Float the dark rum on top, and garnish with a lime wheel, cherry, and fresh mint.

The Mai Tai Cocktail

* If you do not have orgeat, just mix a few drops of almond extract, milk, water and sugar together until you get a sweet, almond syrup taste. It is not the same, but it will do.

Trivia: The Mai Tai became so popular that it supposedly depleted world rum supplies in the 1940s and '50s!

Hi, I'm Scott Gardner, your mindful mixologist. While I am not a professional bartender, I have made well over two hundred different and unique cocktails, and invented over fifteen original drinks, including my famous European Vacation, Muzetta's Waltz, and The Cherry Bella, all of which can be found in my book, Lock it, Flip it, Kick it & Shake!

Besides shaking, stirring, and sipping, I also enjoy golfing, reading, and writing. My wife and I both love animals and we have recently gotten into birding, which is a fun and rewarding hobby. And our favorite birds... The Philadelphia Eagles, of course! Go Birds!
